Avignon Festival
Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, the Festival d’Avignon is today one of the most important international events for contemporary performing arts. Every July, Avignon becomes a theater-city, transforming its architectural heritage into a variety of majestic and astonishing venues, welcoming tens of thousands of theater lovers of all generations.
The Festival successfully combines a popular audience with international creation. Avignon is also a spirit: the city is an open-air forum, where festival-goers talk about the shows and share their experiences as spectators. For a whole month, everyone can have access to contemporary, lively culture.
The program includes not only shows, but also readings, exhibitions, films and debates, allowing visitors to discover the world of the guest artists and intellectuals. Every evening, the Festival offers one or more “premieres”, making Avignon a true place of creation and adventure, for artists and spectators alike.
